The Fabric Store Still on Brunswick Street but on the side opposite of the Fabric Lab and Drapers was The Fabric Store (https://wearethefabricstore.com/). I soooooo loved this store that I went two days in a row. First and foremost, I love the fact that the Fabric Store’s selection is entirely deadstock. Textile waste is a huge environmental problem so I tend to gravitate toward stores with an emphasis on sustainability. As if that wasn’t enough, they were having a 50% sale on most fabrics. Now, one of my favorite things is a sale and BAYYY BEEEE were they having a sale!!!! By the time the 50% off and the currency conversion (0.6 USD) were done, some of the leather hides were $60USD. They had a beautiful selection of Merino wools. They also had some amazing, showstopping silks. I got a piece of beautiful rose colored checked sheer silk which will eventually be a blouse. If I wasn’t restricted by the checked luggage weight requirements and my overflowing fabric stash, I probably would have bought the entire store. I was particularly drawn to their selection of silks. They had beautifully unique silk prints. The plaid was probably my favorite. Here, I was surrounded by a myriad of inspirations for formal dresses and special occasion clothing. I loved the variety of textures and colors they had. Now, I don’t know that I necessarily agree with the name. Were there some cheap fabrics? Yes. But there were fabric at a wide variety of price points. They ranged from a whole table of fabrics that was $2.95AUD/metre to brocades/jacquards that were $29.95/metre to amazingly gorgeous laces that were $40-50/metre. I had been looking for an orange knit fabric for quite some time and found a beautiful double knit that is perfect for the project I have in mind. I loved the silver Kenya wore but for me, I really wanted something rose gold. Unlike previous experiences with sewing sequins, my house wasn’t showered in sequins when I was done. Cons: the sequins are fused to the fabric. Why does this present a challenge? Typically you would remove sequins within the seam allowance of a fabric to reduce bulk and decrease the chances of the needle breaking. These sequins are NOT as easy to remove as strung sequins so the best option was to sew through them with a microtex needle. Pro: The fabric has a great amount of stretch Con: If you stretch it too much, the sequins will pop off. You need to keep this in mind if you are making something that is extremely fitted. Enter my tried and true and used 50-11 times Mccalls 6886 pattern. If you’ve followed me for a while, you have seen this pattern about 50,621 times. I absolutely love it because it is easy to sew, fits well and can be used as a base for numerous modifications. As a Minerva Brand Ambassador, I am fortunate to have access to their amazing variety of Minerva Core fabrics. For this project, I chose a Minerva Core Range Cotton Lycra Stretch Jersey in the color Citrus green. I have a ton of sleeveless dresses, lots of dresses with long or 3/4 sleeves but basically none with short sleeves. To make this iteration of this pattern different, I decided to add a keyhole cut out. I love cut outs and they have definitely been having a moment in the last couple of years. I was eager to get the project done so I didn’t do the best planning for the cut out and learned the hard way that I really should have measured and drawn that cut out with more diligence. Because I was altering the pattern and the fabric was something I did not want to risk, I went ahead and made a muslin. I wanted a high neck and a zipper closure. The toughest part was figuring out the placement of the zipper as this would definitely require a coat with front princess seams. I found Simplicity 4403 at Upcycle CRC, a nearby creative materials reseller. It’s a Threads Collection pattern for Simplicity. So as you can imagine, it is very well made, the instructions are amazing and it taught me a few new techniques. However, the amazing style lines in this dress provide a huge number of opportunity for creativity. The raglan sleeve has two pieces which would be a great opportunity to create a split sleeve. Color blocking is also a great option with both the sleeves and the bodice. I plan on making this again and will probably do some type of statement sleeve. You can add a slit in the skirt. The width of the scuba knit was about 60 inches so I opened the fabric and sewed the back center seam parallel to the selvedge. I divided this piece into quarters and matched the center front and back of the skirt with the center front and back of the bodice. I matched the other markings with the side seam. To make the circumference of the skirt piece the same as the bottom of the bodice, I pleated the front and gathered the back. I sewed the two pieces together and Voila! Lessons learned in preparation for making the real garment: #1- I should not have skipped stay stitching the neckline. #2 I should have been more careful when I was ironing this knit fabric. #3 Cutting two front bodice pieces instead of one front and one back was just plain silliness. I moved the bodice while the weights were on the seams and ended up stretching out the neckline. DOH!!!!! So even though the shape was what I wanted, I completely destroyed the neckline by stretching it. The solution: fold over the stretched out part and keep in movin’. A jumpsuit makes getting dressed very simple: it's one piece, so I don’t have to worry about mixing and matching a top and bottom or the ongoing debate of to tuck or not to tuck. I also love the fact that in general, they are very versatile. The fabric was probably made some time in the 1970s. I have no idea what the content is or where it was made but moment I saw it, I knew I needed to be draped in it. So I decided to make a maxi dress. However, with a 45 inch width and a scant 4 yards of length, the piece of fabric was a bit too small. I extended the pattern pieces so the dress would be floor length but that meant that I could not have the sleeves as originally designed by the pattern. I adapted the sleeves to be shorter but wider. I took the bodice from Simplicity 1059 and made a cut out in the back. The skirt was two long rectangles. The front had a slit in the center (are you seeing the theme here?). This was attached to a waistband with piping. I added pockets to the side. One huge lesson from this dress: always make sure you have an adequate ‘exit plan’ for any garment. As much as I love this dress, it requires an amazing feat of acrobatics to get into and out of it. I needed something that I could wear out when the weather was a bit chilly. Of all of the projects, this was by far the most difficult. I took the bodice from the original pattern and then blended the lines with a knit skirt sloper that I drafted. I added an exposed metal zipper in the back and a slit up the front. I debated for a while whether or not to keep the dress sleeveless but decided to make a cape sleeve. I took the original dress sleeve pattern and altered that to achieve the look. This was by far the easiest of the adaptations. To make the dress more form-fitting, I cut a size smaller than my measurements would have suggested and took in the seams to fit my shape. The piece that I bought from here was a bit thinner than the wax print but was still a sufficient weight to make a skirt. Their Ankara starts at $4.99 per yard. They have a HUGE selection of laces at a wide variety of price points.
