My First Mimi G Pattern: Simplicity #s9370

For my second project of 2022, I decided I needed to make something I could wear out now that the Earth is starting to lift COVID restrictions and open again.  I wanted something that could would give me some coverage but still be a bit sexy.  Enter Mimi G’s Simplicity Pattern 9370.  This was my very first project using a Mimi G pattern.  And luckily, I had a beautiful stretch crepe from Mood Fabrics to pair it with.

The fit is curve hugging so it is super important to make sure the fabric you choose has the appropriate amount of stretch.  There is a handy guide on the back of the pattern envelope to help you with this.

Sometimes mo’ seamlines = mo’ problems.  However, the amazing style lines in this dress provide a huge number of opportunity for creativity.  The raglan sleeve has two pieces which would be a great opportunity to create a split sleeve.  Color blocking is also a great option with both the sleeves and the bodice.  I plan on making this again and will probably do some type of statement sleeve.  You can add a slit in the skirt.  There are just so many modifications you can make to this pattern to make it more your own.

The cut out could make it a bit difficult to wear traditional shapewear. If you want a bit of “control”, you could line the skirt with fabric that has some compressive properties such as power net or power mesh

For the fit, I did have to make a few adjustments.  The sleeves circumference was a bit too wide for me so I took in the seam.  The other adjustment I plan to make is to “peg” the skirt a bit so that the bottom hem is a bit narrower/more fitted toward the knee.

My impressions:

For me, the project overall was fairly easy.  I think it would be a great learning experience/skill builder for a beginning sewist.  For more experienced sewists, it will be a breeze.

Does the finished product look like the pics and illustrations on the pattern envelope? Yep

So would I make this dress again?  Absolutely!  I already have plans to make a maxi version in an animal print.  As a matter of fact, this project has made me more excited to try more Mimi G patterns (I already have a couple more in the stash)
